Starting in California

Never held a fly rod? Start here.

Find beginner lessons, women-only clinics and welcoming fly shops, all in one place. Every listing tells you the price, the dates and whether you need your own gear, so you can show up without the guesswork.

32 places to learn across California, each checked against the organizer's own website.

No gear? No problem.

We tell you up front which lessons lend rods, reels and waders, so you can try it before you buy anything.

Learn alongside women.

Women-only clinics and women's programs are tagged on every listing, so you can find the room you'll feel comfortable in.

Vouched for, not just listed.

First-Timer Friendly

A badge you can trust, because it's earned.

Anyone can say they welcome beginners. We only give the badge when three things are true. Reviews are starting now, so you won't see badges on listings just yet.

  1. 1They teach total beginners. Not "some experience helpful." Day one, from scratch.
  2. 2You can borrow or rent gear. No need to buy a full setup before you know you love it.
  3. 3Women vouch for it. Someone like you has been, and would send a friend.
Why I built this

I was too intimidated to walk into a fly shop.

I love camping and I wanted to learn fly fishing, but I never knew where to start. I had never taken a lesson because I didn't know who to ask, and walking into a shop full of experts felt like walking into the wrong room. So I'm building the guide I wish I'd had, and learning right alongside you.

— Tineessa, founder and fellow beginner
